Jeff Garcia is on the short list of the most recognizable names ever to make the jump from the CFL to the NFL, but he believes more players are capable of doing so than many realize.

“There’s not a lot that differentiates players that are in the CFL and players that are in the NFL. It’s really about the opportunity, and when the opportunity presents itself, being ready to strike,” Garcia told Bob ‘The Moj’ Marjanovich from Super Bowl LX radio row.

“Now you may not get many of those, so you’d better be on top of it. But there’s also the political aspect of things, and how that changes the outlook. You could be better than a quarterback on this roster, but because they invested a draft pick into that guy, he’s gonna get every opportunity to fail, and you’re not gonna be given the chance just because they wasted a draft pick on him, which is their fault.”

Garcia spent five seasons in the CFL with the Calgary Stampeders from 1994 to 1998, beginning as the backup to fellow legend Doug Flutie before stepping in due to injury in 1995 and officially taking over the top job in 1996. He was a four-time West Division all-star, while throwing for 16,442 yards, 111 touchdowns, and 52 interceptions. The Gilroy, Cal., native also rushed for 2,358 yards and 24 majors in his time north of the border.

The 55-year-old recalls being ready to put down roots in Calgary following the 1998 season, having already purchased a house and opened a restaurant in town. Instead, he got the opportunity to work out for five NFL teams — the Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins, and San Francisco 49ers — and fielded contract offers from both the Fins and Niners. He would go on to sign with his childhood team in San Francisco, kicking off a 12-year tenure in the NFL.

While many CFL stars have signed deals in the league down south in the prime of their careers only to be sent packing, Garcia credits his success to having the right person advocating for him.

“The major reason for me signing with San Francisco was Bill Walsh. Bill Walsh was in my corner,” he explained, referencing the Hall of Fame coach who led the Niners to three Super Bowls.

“Bill Walsh, who was now a part of the management side, had come back from coaching at Stanford University and had watched me play against his Stanford team (with San Jose State). On that day, when I played against Bill and the Stanford Cardinal, he said I did some Joe Montana-like things, and that kid can play. I always remembered that, and so I struck up a relationship with Bill, and he tried to help me at different points of my years in the CFL, getting me opportunities with teams.”

While Walsh’s stamp of approval wasn’t without its added challenges, Garcia knows that it provided him with greater investment and opportunity than other recent CFL quarterbacks who have attempted to make the NFL jump, like B.C.’s Nathan Rourke.

“I really came into the 49ers, probably, at a prime time,” he admitted. “Now, I wasn’t (head coach Steve) Mariucci’s guy. Ty Detmer, who they had traded to Cleveland, was his guy. He had him in Green Bay when he had Favre and Brunell. He had a relationship with Ty Detmer, and when the Niners traded him to Cleveland or let him go, now, all of a sudden, I’m Bill Walsh’s guy. That kind of rubbed Mooch a little bit wrong at first, and I had to prove to Mooch that I was capable and that I belonged. But they had Steve Young at the time. They didn’t figure that they’d need Jeff Garcia anytime soon.”

That changed in a hurry when Young suffered a season-ending concussion in 1999 and retired that offseason. Garcia would take over as the starter and was selected to three straight Pro Bowls from 2000 to 2002 as San Francisco’s QB1.

The six-foot-one, 205-pound pivot left the Niners following the 2003 season and would go on to play for the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Oakland Raiders, and Houston Texans, making one more Pro Bowl in 2007. In 125 career NFL games, he threw for 25,537 yards, 161 touchdowns, and 83 interceptions while rushing for 2,140 yards and 26 majors.

Even with all those accomplishments in the NFL, it is his final CFL game that still stands out as the defining moment of his career. Garcia left the three-down league on a high note, leading the Stampeders to a 26-24 victory over Hamilton in the 86th Grey Cup while being named the game’s MVP.

“I think the Grey Cup title is right there at the top,” Garcia said. “Anytime you compete in a team sport, and you accomplish a goal that you set out to accomplish, that you had your eyes set upon at the beginning of the year, and you’re able to carry that on through to fruition, to accomplish that is the greatest experience in sports. Doesn’t matter what level or where you’re at in accomplishing that. That, to me, is one of the ultimates to be able to do that in Calgary, with the Calgary Stampeders, with the teammates that I had.”

While Garcia was never able to compete in a Super Bowl, the gap between the value of that championship and the Grey Cup may be even smaller than the difference in talent between the players that compete in them.

Folarin Orimolade was unable to finish the 2025 CFL season after he suffered a torn Achilles in late September. He recently provided an update on his recovery, saying he’s unsure if he’ll be ready for the start of training camp on May 10.

“I don’t know (if I’ll be ready for training camp),” Orimolade told Stamps TV from his offseason home in Arizona. “I’m at 20 weeks (since the injury), so I think I am where I’m supposed to be. Hopefully (I’ll be back) by camp, but not trying to rush it too much.”

“(The rehab process is) not complicated. You need to be able to be strong and you need to be able to move quickly. I can’t move quickly yet, so I need to be sure I do both.”

The 30-year-old made 19 defensive tackles and four sacks over 12 regular-season starts with the Stampeders in 2025, his first year back in the city where he started his CFL career. Orimolade left for the Toronto Argonauts as a free agent in 2023, though Calgary reacquired him last offseason in a trade that sent Cameron Judge to the Double Blue.

The difference in Calgary’s defence after Orimolade suffered his injury was palpable. The unit allowed only 19.1 offensive points and 365.1 net yards per game with him at defensive end, then 28.5 points and 387.2 net yards per game after he was hurt.

The defence’s negative trend continued into the playoffs as the Stampeders suffered a 33-30 loss to the B.C. Lions in the West Semi-Final.

“(Not being able to play in the playoffs) was the toughest part about (the injury). To be honest, I wasn’t really worried about the rehab. I did a quad tear (in 2019) and a quad tear is much worse, unfortunately. I feel like I came back pretty well from it, so I wasn’t worried so much about the injury itself,” said Orimolade.

“I just felt like we were so close (to winning a Grey Cup in 2025). I feel like if I was there (in the playoffs) we would have been closer, so that was the hard part — knowing that you can’t do anything really about it.”

The native of Washington, D.C. didn’t see the year as a complete write-off, pleased to see the Stampeders shake-off negative predictions and get back to the playoffs after a 6-12 season in 2023 and 5-12-1 season in 2024.

“I think the biggest positive was that we were a team that was told by various people slash media outlets that were going to be no good and we saw — at least, especially in the beginning — a team that was hungry, come together, and say, ‘We don’t really care about the outside noise,'” said Orimolade.

“(We were just focusing on) how we get better every day and be the best in our minds, essentially, so I really appreciated having younger guys, veteran guys all coming together and saying, ‘That’s what we’re going to do,’ and doing it.”

Calgary lost Jaylon Hutchings, Jacob Roberts, and Damien Alford to the NFL earlier this offseason, though they haven’t lost any big names to CFL free agency. Canadian receiver Dejon Brissett agreed to terms on a two-year contract after a breakout season with the Argonauts, while Devodric Bynum and Deonta McMahon will also join the team.

“Free agency, I actually pay attention to it quite a bit. I think it’s pretty fun. That’s been on my mind, like, ‘OK, these are the people I’m going to be going against on different (teams).’ It’s going to be weird, a bit different, but it’s going to be really cool to go against (those guys), so I look at it all around the league,” said Orimolade.

“Then I look for us, like the people that we get, if they make us a much better team. We were a good team last year, and I liked how we were able to sign most everybody — unless they went to the NFL, we were able to retain our players, so we were able to return a core and they get to know each other over time, and they have these prior relationships, but I think it just makes them a more cohesive unit going into the next season, which I believe bodes well for us.”

The Grey Cup will be played at McMahon Stadium in Calgary this November, marking the first time since 2019 that the venue has hosted the CFL’s championship game. Orimolade has won two Grey Cups — one as a rookie in 2018, then another with Toronto in 2024.

The five-foot-eleven, 240-pound defender wants to win another one and become the first-ever Stampeders team to do so at home in the process..

“I feel hungry every year, but I will say that it’s pretty cool to be able to win the Grey Cup in your own backyard. I can’t think of many teams that have done that. I can imagine after you win the Grey Cup, you go party in that city, then you go back to your city and party, too, but it’d be cool to not have to go anywhere — we know exactly where we’re going right after. That’d be cool and all the festivities will happen quicker because you don’t have to worry about going back and stuff,” he said.

“The fans deserve it, too. We haven’t been in the game as an organization since 2018, so it would mean a lot to do it in Calgary for the fans. I think it would be unique for the guys. This is a team that I believe deserves to win. I don’t think many people on the team have won a Grey Cup up here and I think the team, honestly, just even for them, I just want them to be able to have that opportunity. I think it’s one of those games in Canada where it makes you feel like, ‘Whoa, this is a big deal,’ and having that feeling would be amazing.”

Cooper Kupp will be looked to for leadership on Super Bowl Sunday as one of the few Seattle Seahawks with a championship ring, but he’ll be drawing inspiration from another source.

The veteran NFL receiver was asked about his college teammate and friend, Vernon Adams Jr., during Super Bowl media day, and tied his praise to the slogan that Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald has been preaching all week: “Loose and focused.”

“Vernon’s the man. The couple years I got to be around him, he’s just such an incredible competitor, a gamer, and you see all that,” Kupp told Bob ‘The Moj’ Marjanovich from the podium. “Similar to what we talk about being loose and focused, Vern is the epitome of that — loose and focused. His ability to be in the moment but still be himself — no matter where it is, no moment was too big. I absolutely love Vern.”

Adams and Kupp shared the field as youngsters at Eastern Washington University from 2012 to 2014, developing into one of the most dangerous connections in college football. After redshirting his first season, Kupp caught 93 passes for 1,691 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2013 to win the Jerry Rice Award as the top freshman in the FCS. He followed that up with 104 catches for 1,431 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2014, helping VA to win back-to-back Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year Awards.

The foundation of that connection was laid during a unique recruiting visit, where players stayed up late into the night competing with each other rather than partying.

“Until like three in the morning, we were playing basketball, three-on-three pickup. We were playing racquetball. We’re playing football, just mini football games. It was just competing against each other until we were basically exhausted. And then move on to the next day, the next night was the same thing,” Kupp recalled.

Adams transferred to Oregon in 2015, leaving Kupp behind to win the next two Big Sky OPOY awards and the Walter Payton Award as the top player in the FCS. The star receiver completed a quartet of FCS All-American selections with the Eagles and left for the NFL having amassed a staggering 428 catches for 6,464 yards and 73 touchdowns in 52 college games.

His first QB put up 10,438 yards, 110 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions with Eastern Washington before throwing for 2,643, 26 touchdowns, and six interceptions with the Ducks. The two have remained friends since embarking on professional careers on opposite sides of the border, and Adams was a part of Kupp’s wedding party.

The native of Yakima, Wash., was selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams, and has caught 681 passes for 8,369 yards and 59 touchdowns in nine seasons in the league. He was named a first-team All-Pro in 2021 after capturing the receiving Triple Crown, and was named the MVP in Super Bowl LVI.

Adams entered the CFL ranks the same season that Kupp was drafted, but took some time to establish himself as a starting quarterback. He has enjoyed stints with the Montreal Alouettes, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, B.C. Lions, and now the Calgary Stampeder, throwing for 20,437 yards, 117 touchdowns, and 68 interceptions. The 33-year-old has also run for 1,976 yards and 26 majors.

Kupp will compete in his third Super Bowl on Sunday when the Seahawks and New England Patriots kick off from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Cal., at 6:30 p.m. EST. Adams has yet to play for a Grey Cup in his CFL career, but still exemplifies the mindset that Seattle is preaching ahead of the big game.

The five-foot-eleven, 211-pound defender played all 18 regular-season games for the Stampeders in 2025, recording 13 defensive tackles, seven special teams tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble. He made three starts at safety during the regular-season and started again in the West Semi-Final, making three defensive tackles.

The native of Westmead, Australia was originally a third-round pick in the 2022 CFL Global Draft. The 26-year-old has since made 31 defensive tackles, 33 special teams tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, and one pass knockdown over 46 career regular-season CFL games.

The Calgary Stampeders finished third in the West Division standings in 2025 with an 11-7 record but lost the West Semi-Final to the B.C. Lions. Vernon Adams Jr. threw for 4,247 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions over 17 regular-season starts, posting a 11-6 record as the team’s starting quarterback.

The Stampeders ranked fourth in net offence, seventh in net defence, and second with a turnover differential of plus-nine. Dedrick Mills won the CFL’s rushing title with 1,409 yards, while the team’s leading receiver was Dominique Rhymes with 886 yards, and leading tackler was Jacob Roberts with 102 tackles. Calgary finished fifth in attendance with average crowds of 22,295, which was a 3.5 percent increase from the previous year.

The Calgary Stampeders have added quarterback Jacolby Criswell to their exclusive negotiation list.

The 24-year-old played for East Tennessee State as a graduate student in 2025, completing 61.6 percent of his pass attempts for 1,130 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions over eight games. He also rushed 56 times for 277 yards.

The six-foot-one, 230-pound passer originally started his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina, where he attempted just 31 passes over three seasons. He transferred to the University of Arkansas in 2023, where he completed 63.0 percent of his passes for 143 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions over four games.

The native of Morrilton, Ark. transferred back to North Carolina in 2024 and became the team’s starter, completing 58.1 percent of his passes for 2,459 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions, going 3-7 as a starter. He also rushed 71 times for 103 yards and three scores.

CFL teams can claim the rights to up to 45 players via the negotiation list on a first-come, first-served basis, provided that they are not eligible for the Canadian or Global Drafts, and have never played in the league before. These players can be added, traded, or removed from the list at any time.

Being added to a negotiation list does not mean that the player has expressed interest in the CFL, and some are unaware that their rights have even been claimed. Players can only force their removal from the list if the team does not provide them with a minimum contract offer at their request.

If you thought CFL free agency began on Tuesday, February 10, think again.

The league’s communication window, also known as the legal tampering window, opened on Sunday, February 1, and teams wasted no making decisions.

Even though teams have until Sunday, February 8, at 12 p.m. EST to speak to pending free agents, and no deals can become legally binding until Tuesday, February 10, more than 30 players have agreed to terms on contracts with new teams. That included over 25 of 3DownNation‘s top 50 available players entering the day.

All nine franchises took different approaches. The Ottawa Redblacks turned over much of their roster, striking deals with 11 players. The Edmonton Elks and Winnipeg Blue Bombers weren’t far behind, each making a series of key additions. Other teams opted to stand on early signings, like the B.C. Lions, who did not have a single contract reported.

Here is a look at what every team has accomplished — who they had signed, who they added, and who they lost.

Please note that “N” denotes National players (ie. Canadians), “A” denotes American players, and “G” denotes Global players.

The Calgary Stampeders have agreed to terms with Canadian receiver Dejon Brissett, 3DownNation has confirmed. Mark Stephen was first to report the news. Barring anything unforeseen, he’s expected to sign with the team on a two-year deal.

Brissett had a breakout season in 2025, shattering his previous career highs with 65 catches for 907 yards and three touchdowns for the Toronto Argonauts. In 2024, he was named the Most Valuable Canadian in the 111th Grey Cup after catching three passes for 45 yards and recovering an onside kick, winning his second CFL title in the process.

The 29-year-old was originally selected with the second overall pick in the first round of the 2020 CFL Draft and has spent his entire career in Double Blue. In 71 career games, he has caught 136 passes for 1,905 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Mississauga, Ont. native spent four seasons at the University of Richmond before transferring to the University of Virginia for his final collegiate season in 2019, where he caught two passes for 18 yards in 12 games. With the Spiders, Brissett notched 86 receptions for 1,282 yards and nine touchdowns, while adding 941 kick return yards and one score in 33 career games.

Pending CFL free agents can negotiate with teams across the league during the communication window, which closes on Sunday, February 8. Players can agree to terms on a contract with a particular franchise; however, the deals are not legally binding and can’t be made official until after free agency opens on Tuesday, February 10.

Calgary finished third in the West Division standings in 2025 with an 11-7 record but lost the West Semi-Final to the B.C.
