“Hard money” is a CFL term that refers to any portion of a contract that is paid even if a player is hurt. This includes base salary, signing bonuses, roster bonuses, housing allowances, travel allowances, and training allowances. Marketing money, which is officially called “non-football-related services,” isn’t always guaranteed, though we’ve decided to include it in hard money for this series.

Any additional components — often referred to as “playtime” or “performance incentives” — are outlined in part or in full in the paragraph accompanying each player. These bonuses are often tied to how much a player sees the field, produces yardage, scores a touchdown, makes tackles, or whether or not they’re named an all-star.

TSN is once again set to broadcast two CFL preseason games in 2026, according to a schedule recently posted to the network’s website.

The two contests chosen for broadcast will feature the Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday, May 23, and the Montreal Alouettes at Ottawa Redblacks on Friday, May 29. The latter game will also be carried by TSN’s French-language affiliate, RDS, which is slated to show the first meeting between Ottawa and Montreal on Friday, May 22, as well.

TSN broadcasts every game of the CFL regular season and playoffs, though that is not possible during the preseason due to overlapping games. The 4:00 p.m. EDT on May 23 means that the majority of that contest will be played while Edmonton and B.C. are in action, while the game on May 29 at 7:00 p.m. EDT will run concurrently with the second meeting between Hamilton and Toronto, with parts of two others also coinciding.

The remaining preseason games will still be available for viewing on CFL+, the league’s free streaming platform. Those online broadcasts, which rely on in-stadium video feeds and utilize the home team’s radio play-by-play calls, have been available since 2023, but were marred by substantial technical issues last season. The CFL has since promised to correct those problems, though it remains to be seen if that will be delivered upon after the league website once again crashed during the CFL Draft.

The CFL’s exclusive partnership with TSN is set to expire after this season. The network has owned the CFL’s exclusive television broadcast rights since 2008, with the most recent agreement being announced following the 2019 season.

Commissioner Stewart Johnston told reporters in January that he had set a self-imposed deadline for securing a new broadcast deal before the start of the 2026 season. No further announcements have been made on the topic, with just four days remaining before Saskatchewan and Calgary open the preseason on Monday, May 18.

The CFL family gained a famous in-law this week, as former Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Devlin ‘Duck’ Hodges officially wed country music star Lainey Wilson, the couple announced on Thursday.

The pair reportedly tied that knot at a ceremony in Dickson, Tenn., on Sunday, May 10. They got engaged in February 2025 after first making their relationship public in May 2023, though Wilson has stated that they were involved for two years prior to that date, pre-dating Hodges’ time in Canada.

The 30-year-old signed with the Redblacks in September 2021, garnering significant media attention due to his previous NFL experience. He dressed for four games to end the season and made one start, going 16-of-38 passing for 139 yards and an interception, while adding nine carries for 38 yards. Despite originally signing a three-year contract, he retired ahead of training camp the following season.

Hodges rose to fame as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, playing in eight NFL games and unexpectedly making six starts. He completed 100-of-160 passes (62.5 percent) for 1,063 yards with five touchdowns and eight interceptions and rushed 21 times for 68 yards while compiling a 3-3 win-loss record.

Despite those results, Hodges endeared himself to fans across the league for his unlikely rise and unique backstory as a champion duck-caller. He later spent time with the Los Angeles Rams.

Prior to his professional career, Hodges was a four-year starter at Samford University and was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year three times. In 2018, he earned the Walter Payton Award as the top player in FCS football.

Wilson rose to prominence after her single “Things a Man Oughta Know” went three times Platinum in 2020. She has since produced notable hits including “Heart Like A Truck,” “Watermelon Moonshine,” “Wilflowers and Wild Horses,” and “4x4xU.” The 33-year-old won the Grammy Award for Best Country Album with “Bell Bottom Country” in 2024, and has dabbled in acting, appearing in the popular television series “Yellowstone.”

Notably, Wison’s songs have reached number one on the Canadian country music charts on four occasions, while her new husband failed to establish himself as a number one in Canada.

American quarterback Matthew Shiltz has signed a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Shiltz spent two seasons with the Tiger-Cats from 2022-23, appearing in 28 games and completing 193-of-280 pass attempts for 2,491 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed 51 times for 312 yards and two touchdowns. He originally announced his retirement on social media in December 2025.

“Hamilton felt like a second home to me. Coming here, it’s where I really felt I settled down as a player and as a man,” Shiltz said in a statement. “There was something different about this place and something different about playing in front of the fans that always stuck with me. To the Ticats fans, thank you for welcoming me in. This place will always have a special place in my heart.”

The six-foot-one, 210-pound QB spent his final three-down league season with the Ottawa Redblacks following one year with the Calgary Stampeders, two with Hamilton and four with the Montreal Alouettes. The 33-year-old dressed for 106 CFL games in his career, completing 401-of-626 passes (64 percent) for 5,078 yards with 22 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. The St. Charles, Ill. native has also rushed 124 times for 789 yards and six majors.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats opened training camp on May 10. Hamilton will play its two preseason games against the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday, May 23, and Friday, May 29. Final roster cuts are due on Saturday, May 30, after which the team will play its first regular-season game against the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday, June 4.

Hamilton recently selected Louisiana Tech offensive lineman Jonathan Denis with their first-round pick in the 2026 CFL Draft, adding depth up front. The team’s other major offseason additions include quarterback Tre Ford, receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr., and linebacker Wynton McManis.

In 2025, the Tiger-Cats finished first in the East Division standings with an 11-7 record, though the team lost the East Final to the Montreal Alouettes.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed Canadian defensive back Trae Tomlinson to their training camp roster.

The five-foot-eight, 183-pound native of Winnipeg, Man., went unselected in the 2026 CFL Draft. At Louisiana’s pro day, he recorded a 36-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot, two-inch broad jump and a 4.47-second forty-yard dash.

Tomlinson concluded his collegiate career at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, playing 11 games primarily as a slot corner. He compiled 26 total tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack and one pass deflection with the Ragin’ Cajuns. He transferred after spending three seasons (2022-2024) at the University of Richmond, where he registered 90 defensive tackles, three tackles for loss, one interception, 14 pass deflections, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 38 games.

The Riders have also placed American receiver Tyrie Cleveland on the retired list and re-signed American receiver Juwann Winfree, who was released on Wednesday.

The six-foot-one, 210-pound target was selected by the Denver Broncos in the sixth round, 187th overall, during the 2019 NFL Draft. He appeared in three games in his rookie season, then joined the Green Bay Packers from 2020 to 2022 and the Indianapolis Colts from 2023 to 2024. Over that period, he appeared in 23 regular-season games, registering nine receptions for 75 yards. He spent time with the Houston Texans in 2025.

Collegiately, the New York native spent three seasons at Colorado (2016-2018), appearing in 20 games. He posted 649 receiving yards on 49 receptions with four touchdowns. Prior to Colorado, Winfree suited up for Coffeyville Community College (2015) and the University of Maryland (2014).

The Saskatchewan Roughriders opened training camp on May 10. Saskatchewan will play its first preseason game against the Calgary Stampeders on Monday, May 18, and its second preseason game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday, May 23. Final roster cuts are due on Saturday, May 30, after which the team will play its first regular-season game against the B.C. Lions on Saturday, June 13.

Saskatchewan recently selected Michigan State defensive back Malcolm Bell with their first-round pick in the 2026 CFL Draft, adding a key piece to pair with Tevaughn Campbell. The team’s other major offseason additions include defensive lineman James Vaughters and returner James Letcher Jr.

In 2025, the Roughriders finished first in the West Division standings with a 12-6 record. The team went on to defeat the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, marking the club’s first championship in 12 years.

The Ottawa Sooners’ coaching staff certainly won’t lack for CFL experience this season.

The Canadian Junior Football League club, which hired Ottawa Redblacks’ running backs coach Josh Sacobie to be their head coach and director of sport in April, has unveiled a series of coaching staff additions over the past several days, many of whom boast serious professional resumes.

On May 9, the team made their first announcement via social media, naming former Redblacks Jonathan Rose and Sherrod Baltimore as co-defensive back coaches. Rose played 66 games in the CFL for Ottawa and Edmonton, earning two East Division all-star selections, while Baltimore played 76 career games, all in Ottawa. Former Redblacks safety Justin Howell will also join the team as a defensive quality control coach after his season with the Rhein Fire in Europe concludes.

Later that same day, the Sooners revealed that All-CFL receiver Dominique Rhymes would be part of a trio of receivers coaches, alongside Brandon Weekes and former Toronto Argonauts’ draft pick Phil Iloki. Rhymes, who announced his retirement this offseason, amassed 5,822 yards and 32 touchdowns with the Redblacks, B.C. Lions, and Calgary Stampeders.

The following day, the team unveiled that a pair of former J.P. Metras Trophy winners would split defensive line coaching duties, bringing on board Deionte Knight and Ettore Lattanzio. Knight played 36 CFL games with Toronto, Hamilton, and Ottawa, while Lattanzio spent five seasons with the Blue Bombers and Redblacks.

On Wednesday, the club announced that longtime CFL coach and general manager Adam Rita would be serving as a special advisor to football operations. The 78-year-old won three Grey Cups as an assistant coach and one as a head coach with the Argonauts in 1991. He posted a 40-46 record across head coaching stints in Toronto, Ottawa, and B.C., and went 122-128-1 as the general manager with the Lions and Argonauts, winning two more Grey Cups. He has remained active as a coach in Europe since retiring from the CFL in 2010.

It is clear that Sacobie, who served as offensive coordinator at Carleton University prior to his own CFL stint, is leveraging his professional and amateur connections in order to build a star-studded staff. It is unclear whether the team is done adding marquee names or if more hires are still to come.

The Sooners were founded in 1960 and have won four CJFL national championships in their history, with the last coming in 1992. The club played in the Quebec Junior Football League from 1996 to 2008 and won three Mason Cup titles over that span before returning to the CJFL in 2009. Notable alumni of the team include Ian Beckstead, Darren Joseph, Rick Sowieta, and Pat Woodcock.

Ottawa went 1-7 last season, missing the playoffs. The Ontario Football Conference has yet to announce a schedule for the 2026 season

The six-foot-six, 315-pound blocker suited up in 11 games for the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2025, starting all of them at left tackle. He attempted to transfer to Mississippi State this offseason, but was ruled ineligible by the NCAA and will instead commence a pro career.

Sneh began his collegiate career at Elizabeth City State University in 2022, a Division II program in North Carolina. He appeared in 14 games over two seasons before transferring to Wagner College in the FCS in 2024, making 11 starts. He briefly transferred again to Kansas State University but departed after spring camp, joining UAB.

The Montreal Alouettes opened training camp on May 10. The team will play its two preseason games against the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday, May 22, and Friday, May 19. Final roster cuts are due on Saturday, May 30, after which the team will play its first regular-season game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Thursday, June 4.

Montreal recently selected Arkansas tight end Rohan Jones with their first-round pick in the 2026 CFL Draft, though he is currently under contract with the Los Angeles Rams. The team’s other major offseason additions include quarterback Dustin Crum, receiver Jerreth Sterns, and returner DeVonte Dedmon.

In 2025, the Alouettes finished second in the East Division standings with a 10-8 record and beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Final before losing the 112th Grey Cup to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The most competitive conference in Canadian university football has unveiled its schedule for the 2026 season.

Canada West action will begin on Friday, September 4, with an opening night doubleheader, as the University of British Columbia visits the University of Calgary, while the University of Alberta hosts the University of Regina. The University of Saskatchewan will visit the University of Manitoba the following day.

The conference will have 24 regular-season games played over nine weeks of action, ending on Saturday, October 31. Each team will play three opponents twice — home and away — and two opponents once. Week 6 is a designated bye week for all teams for the Thanksgiving Weekend.

Notably, provincial rivals Saskatchewan and Regina will play just once this season, on Saturday, September 26. That will mark a rematch of last season’s Hardy Cup game, in which the Huskies defeated the Rams by a score of 25-24.

The Canada West playoffs will commence with two semi-final games on Saturday, November 7. The 89th Hardy Cup will be played on Saturday, November 14, with the conference champion advancing to face the top team from the RSEQ in the Uteck Bowl for a berth in the Vanier Cup.

All games will be available for streaming on Canada West TV. Passes will go on sale in August.
