Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke earned a two-year contract extension with the B.C. Lions after producing a Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian season in 2025.

The Victoria, B.C. native was the highest-paid player in the CFL last year, earning $624,200. Rourke completed 70.4 percent of his passes for 5,290 yards with 31 touchdowns, 16 interceptions and ran 61 times for 564 yards, 9.2 yards per carry, plus 10 majors. That provided a great return on investment for general manager Ryan Rigmaiden.

The 27-year-old’s compensation for the 2026 three-down league season was not altered when the new deal was agreed upon. He’s scheduled to earn $684,700 in hard money. That total comes from a $275,000 base salary, $210,000 February 5 active roster bonus, $160,000 in marketing money, $14,700 in housing and a $10,000 training allowance.

In 2027, Rourke’s slated to earn $699,700 in hard money. He could receive a $300,000 base salary, $215,000 February 1 active roster bonus, $160,000 in marketing money, $14,700 in housing and a $10,000 training allowance.

For the final year in his current agreement, the six-foot-one, 209-pound dual-threat QB is expected to earn $704,700 in hard money for the 2028 season. He should receive a $310,000 base salary, $220,000 February 1 active roster bonus, $150,000 in marketing money, $14,700 in housing and a $10,000 training allowance. Half his base salary — $155,000 — is guaranteed.

Each season includes $9,000 in additional all-star and award incentives: $1,000 for West all-star, $2,000 for CFL all-star, $3,000 for Most Outstanding Canadian and $3,000 for league MOP. The Lions would happily pay those bonuses if Rourke’s performing at elite levels for every year in the contract and putting B.C. in Grey Cup contention in the process.

Whether Rourke earns extra money, his contract has spiked compared to his CFL rookie paperwork, which saw him earn $71,500 in hard money along with $3,749.94 in playtime cash during the 2022 season. That year, he completed 78.7 percent of his passes for 3,349 yards with 25 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and ran 39 times for 304 yards with seven majors.

After one season learning behind Michael Reilly, Rourke proved he could play at a high level in the CFL, and it’s led to Grey Cup expectations on the West Coast with a big-money contract extension to match.

The star linebacker won a Grey Cup with Mitchell in 2018 and the pair plan to be driving forces as the Ticats try to end the longest championship drought in the Canadian Football League, which sits at 25 seasons.

The 35-year-old Mitchell led Hamilton to an 11-7 record last year, clinched first place and hosted the East Final but lost to the Montreal Alouettes on home turf. McManis believes the Tabbies can contend for a Grey Cup. He saw it up-close as the Toronto Argonauts lost the season series with their arch rivals two games to one last year.

McManis admitted leaving the Argos had been on his mind for a “little bit.” He won two Grey Cups with the Boatmen one in 2022 and the other in 2024, although the six-foot, 220-pounder defender felt Toronto had become too comfortable for him, not in a negative way, but change was needed to provide renewed energy to focus towards his stated goal: chasing greatness.

Changing from double blue to black and gold definitely feels different for McManis but it’s not completely new to him. He grew up a Pittsburgh Steelers fan and wanted to wear those colours. That’s happened in Canada’s Steel City as the two-time CFL all-star will sport his familiar No. 48. Despite the rivalry with the Argonauts, there’s no extra incentive to play the Double Blue.

However, Orlondo Steinauer and Milanovich made it clear the 2021 Hec Crighton Trophy winner was wanted in the Hammer.

The 27-year-old flashed his potential in Edmonton despite constant change and turnover during his time with the franchise. He had three offensive coordinators through four seasons with the Elks: Stephen McAdoo, Jarious Jackson, and Jordan Maksymic. The Double E defence was also the worst in the CFL by a wide margin during his five starts in 2025, prior to Cody Fajardo being installed as the starter, which ultimately led to Ford becoming a free agent.

Ford indicated there were no conversations with Edmonton about potentially restructuring his contract and staying in the Alberta capital as Fajardo’s backup. It’s an idea he thought about on his own due to relationships with people on the team and owning a house in the city. After some consideration, however, the six-foot-one, 192-pound passer felt starting fresh with a new team was best for his career and his goal to become a professional starter.

Tre will have a great opportunity to learn from him and compete for our backup quarterback job. I look forward to helping him become the player that he knows he can be.”

Milanovich has tutored elite quarterbacks in the Canadian Football League, Anthony Calvillo, Ricky Ray, Zach Collaros, Trevor Harris, Cody Fajardo, and Mitchell among them. Ford called him a “guru for quarterback coaching.” The University of Waterloo product is prepared to be coached hard by Milanovich who munches tape for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks during the season.

There are fond memories for Ford in Hamilton. He started his first career CFL game there on Canada Day in 2022. Edmonton came back from a 22-9 deficit to steal a 29-24 win as the dual-threat QB completed 15-of-26 passes with one touchdown versus one interception and added six carries for 61 yards.

Those good vibes should boost Ford’s confidence as he starts anew with the Tiger-Cats.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed American linebacker Wynton McManis to a one-year contract for the 2026 CFL season, per sources.

Hamilton defensive coordinator Brent Monson coached linebackers for the Calgary Stampeders in 2017 when McManis first signed in the Canadian Football League. He was released by the Toronto Argonauts on Tuesday.

The Ticats had a hole to fill at middle linebacker after East Division Most Outstanding Rookie, Canadian Devin Veresuk signed with the Indianapolis Colts in January.

McManis, who was 3DownNation’s fifth-ranked pending CFL free agent, missed five regular-season games due in part to a groin injury in 2025 but was productive when on the field with Toronto, recording 62 defensive tackles, four sacks, two interceptions, and one forced fumble. He was the highest-paid player at his position in the three-down league last season, earning $229,500.

The 31-year-old had been with the Argos since 2022, earning two All-CFL selections and helped the team win two championships in 2022 and 2024. He arguably could have been the 111th Grey Cup MVP after leading the Double Blue with six defensive tackles and intercepting Zach Collaros once in an upset victory. His son and daughter were born in Toronto, the city the six-foot, 220-pounder calls home.

“Wynton is one of the premier defenders in our league,” said head coach Scott Milanovich in a statement. “He plays the game the right way — with physicality, intelligence, and a relentless motor. Beyond what he brings on the field, his experience as a Grey Cup champion and his leadership in the locker room are invaluable and we’re excited to welcome him to our organization.”

McManis entered the CFL in 2017 with the Calgary Stampeders, winning a Grey Cup the following year. He signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2020 and appeared in one game the following season, later spending time with the Miami Dolphins prior to returning to Canada.

In 100 career CFL games, McManis has amassed 390 defensive tackles, 52 special teams tackles, 16 sacks, nine interceptions, four forced fumbles, and three defensive touchdowns.

The Memphis, Tennessee native originally signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2016, playing two NFL games. He earned around $211,000 USD while in the NFL.

While at the University of Memphis, McManis posted 110 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks, three passes defended, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one interception in 47 NCAA games for the Tigers.

Hamilton finished first in the East Division standings in 2025 with an 11-7 record, though the team lost the East Final to the Montreal Alouettes. Bo Levi Mitchell led the CFL with 5,296 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions after starting all 18 regular-season games, earning the East Division’s nomination for Most Outstanding Player.

The Tiger-Cats ranked third in net offence, eighth in net defence, and first with a turnover differential of plus-ten. The team’s leading rusher was Greg Bell with 1,038 yards, leading receiver was Kenny Lawler with 1,443 yards, and leading tackler was Stavros Katsantonis with 69 tackles. Hamilton ranked fourth in attendance with average crowds of 22,858, which was a 3.9 percent increase from the previous year.

The 25-year-old spent the 2025 CFL season with the Edmonton Elks. He dressed in 15 regular season games while recording five receptions for 34 yards along with eight special teams tackles.

The six-foot-one, 205-pound target appeared in 17 games with the Calgary Stampeders in 2024, registering three catches for 43 yards plus nine special teams tackles. The Dundas, Ont. native suited up in 46 games over four seasons in Cowtown. He posted eight grabs for 87 yards and notched 29 special teams tackles.

Middlemost was selected in the fourth round, 34th overall during the 2020 CFL Draft. He played his U Sports football at McMaster University. Over 26 collegiate games with the Marauders, he collected 83 receptions for 1,032 yards with seven touchdowns.

During his senior season on campus in the Hammer, the St. Mary Catholic Secondary School graduate produced 32 receptions for 528 yards with four touchdowns in 11 games while helping McMaster win the 112th Yates Cup 29-15 against Western University.

Pending CFL free agents can negotiate with teams across the league during the communication window, which closes on Sunday, February 8. Players can agree to terms on a contract with a particular franchise, however, the deals are not legally binding and can’t be made official until after free agency opens on Tuesday, February 10.

Canadian defensive back Marc-Antoine Dequoy has retired from professional football.

“I want to thank Pierre Karl Péladeau, Danny Maciocia, and the Montreal Alouettes for allowing me to live out my childhood dream and spend my career in Montreal,” Dequoy said in a statement.

“There was a genuine desire to return and we had an agreement on the table, but after discussing it with my loved ones late into the night, I realized my body was no longer ready for that kind of sacrifice. I will never forget the fans of this city and all the love they gave me throughout my career. I cherished every second of my time in Montreal, and I leave at peace, with a clear mind.”

Dequoy suited up in 15 games for the Als in 2025, recording 34 defensive tackles, four special teams tackles, three sacks, and one pick-six while helping the team make it to the 112th Grey Cup. The 31-year-old was named an All-CFL selection at safety in 2023 and 2024 and played a key role in the Alouettes’ CFL title in 2023.

The Ile Bizard, Que. native was originally selected by Montreal in the second round, 14th overall during the 2020 CFL Draft. After a stint with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2020, he has spent his entire CFL career with the Als, registering 162 defensive tackles, 21 special teams tackles, 12 interceptions, five forced fumbles, three sacks, and three defensive touchdowns.

“I want to thank Marc-Antoine for the service he has given us since the beginning of his career with us,” general manager Danny Maciocia said in a statement.

“I recruited him out of the Université de Montréal when he was playing at the CEGEP level, and I have always admired his talent as well as his warm and charismatic personality. He played a key role in our Grey Cup championship in 2023 and has been deeply involved in all of our community initiatives since joining the nest. We will miss him, but I am confident he will enjoy great success in the job market in the years ahead.”

Dequoy played collegiately at the Université de Montréal under then-head coach and current Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia. The six-foot-one, 195-pound defender was twice-named a first-team All-Canadian, earned second-team honours and won the RSEQ Defensive Player of the Year award in 2018. He garnered an invitation to the East-West Shrine Bowl in 2020, though the event was not held due to the pandemic.

Dequoy had two offers on the table, including one from the Alouettes, to continue his playing career in the CFL, per sources.

Montreal finished second in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 10-8 record and beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Final, but then lost the 112th Grey Cup to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Davis Alexander went 7-0 as a starter during the regular season, though he missed 11 games due to a hamstring injury.

The Alouettes ranked eighth in net offence, first in net defence, and third with a turnover differential of plus-eight. The team’s leading rusher was Stevie Scott III with 418 yards, the leading receiver was Tyler Snead with 1,129 yards, and the leading tackler was Darnell Sankey with 103 tackles. Montreal finished sixth in attendance with average crowds of 21,132, which was a 0.8 percent decrease from the previous year.

Lemon spent the last three seasons in Montreal. His best campaign with the Alouettes came in 2023 when he recorded 26 defensive tackles, nine sacks, two interceptions, one touchdown and one forced fumble in 13 regular-season games that year. The proven pass rusher helped Montreal win the 110th Grey Cup by registering nine tackles and four sacks in three playoff games.

“I want to continue playing in the CFL and believe I’m the best pure pass rusher in the league,” Lemon told 3DownNation.

The Charleston, South Carolina native has played 147 regular-season CFL games with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Edmonton Elks, Ottawa Redblacks, Calgary Stampeders, Toronto Argonauts, B.C. Lions, and Alouettes, recording 270 defensive tackles, 103 sacks, 30 forced fumbles, three interceptions, two special teams stops and one touchdown.

The six-foot-two, 248-pounder was a CFL all-star in 2022 and earned the West Division’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player award that same year. He was an East Division all-star in 2016 after recording 14 sacks in 16 games with the Argos.

The Ottawa Redblacks have agreed to terms with Canadian linebacker Michael Brodrique, per sources. Barring anything unforeseen, he’s expected to sign with the team.

The 27-year-old was selected by the Edmonton Elks in the first round, second overall during the 2023 CFL Draft. He spent three seasons in the Alberta capital, recording 19 special teams tackles, two defensive stops, and one sack in 38 regular-season games.

The six-foot-three, 227-pounder produced a 4.59 time in the 40-yard dash at the 2023 CFL Combine. He added 4.28 shuttle, 7.35 three-cone, 34.5-inch vertical, nine-foot, nine-and-one-eighth broad jump while pushing 225 pounds 17 times on the bench press. The Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac, Quebec native was the most athletic linebacker in his draft class.

Brodrique played his collegiate football for the University of Montreal. The two-time Quebec conference (RSEQ) all-star registered 68.5 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, two pass knockdowns, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and one interception in 22 games with the Carabins. He was named a second-team U Sports All-Canadian in 2021.

Pending CFL free agents can negotiate with teams across the league during the communication window, which closes on Sunday, February 8. Players can agree to terms on a contract with a particular franchise; however, the deals are not legally binding and can’t be made official until after free agency opens on Tuesday, February 10.
