Lions keep Canadians David Mackie, Hakeem Johnson in the den

The B.C. Lions have signed Canadian fullback David Mackie and national defensive back Hakeem Johnson to extensions through the 2021 season.

Both players were eligible to become free agents next month.

The six-foot-two, 252-pound Mackie returns for a third season with the Lions. In 28 career CFL games, Mackie has caught seven passes for 65 yards and also played a role on special teams with 10 tackles.

Mackie was selected in the second round, 16th overall by the Lions in the 2018 CFL Draft after a U Sports career at Western University that included an OUA first team all-star selection.

The six-foot-one, 190-pound Johnson was drafted in the fourth round, 33rd overall by the Lions in the 2019 CFL Draft. Johnson began his rookie season on the practice roster before making his CFL debut on September 6 of that season against Montreal.

He would register three defensive tackles and one special teams stop in eight total games. Johnson is also a product of Western University and recorded 22 defensive tackles and three interceptions in two seasons before a knee injury kept him out of action for 2018.

Hakeem Johnson is the younger brother of veteran Lions’ receiver Shaq Johnson.
