Canadian DB Tevaughn Campbell records pick-six against Jets’ QB Joe Flacco

Canadian defensive back Tevaughn Campbell made the first huge play of his NFL career on Sunday.

The native of Scarborough, Ont. intercepted quarterback Joe Flacco late in the first quarter of Sunday’s game between the New York Jets and Los Angeles Chargers. Campbell was in coverage on Jamison Crowder when he undercut a short out route, intercepted the ball and returned it for a six-yard score.

The Chargers had just turned the ball over on a fumble by Keenan Allen at the goal line. Campbell’s pick-six provided his team with the touchdown it narrowly missed out on a moment earlier, going ahead 7-6.

The 27-year-old appeared in two games with Los Angeles last season, though he failed to register any statistics. He was a third-round CFL draft pick out of the University of Regina and played four seasons in the CFL with Calgary (2015), Saskatchewan (2016-2017), and Montreal (2017-2018).

Flacco just went after Campbell on fourth and nine with less than two minutes remaining. The Canadian won the rep, essentially ending the game. Los Angeles won 34-28 and improved to 3-7 on the season. 

Campbell had four tackles, three solo, defended two passes and recorded hi first career interception and touchdown in the NFL as part of the victory.
