Former CFL playmaker Diontae Spencer signs tender with Denver Broncos

Former Canadian Football League receiver and returner Diontae Spencer has signed his tender with the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos had applied a low-round tender on Spencer who was an exclusive rights free agent following his first NFL season.

The 28-year-old performed well at Steelers training camp last August and Pittsburgh wanted to add him to their practice roster, but he had to pass through waivers first. That’s how the Broncos grabbed the diminutive playmaker.

Denver general manager John Elway and his staff kept close tabs on Spencer throughout the pre-season while he was making plays for the Steelers. When the chance came around to put Spencer on the roster the Broncos took advantage.

After earning the main returner role in the Mile High City, Spencer has 26 punt returns for 208 yards (8.0 average), including two 20-plus yarders and one 40-plus yarder along with 15 kick-off returns for 436 yards, three over 40 yards. He caught six passes for 31 yards with a long of 20 on offence.

The McNeese State University product had his first 1,000-yard receiving season in 2018 and earned a CFL all-star nod for the first time in his career. He recorded 2,691 total yards last season and eight touchdowns. In 2017 Spencer set a new CFL single-game mark with 496 all-purpose yards in one game.

Spencer accumulated 644 return yards in 2019, which ranked 10th in the entire NFL. He was named a Pro Bowl alternate for his efforts and earned $495,000 USD in salary overall. The diminutive playmaker is set to make $675,000 USD for the 2020 NFL season.
