Riders sign former NFL running back Terry Swanson

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed former National Football League running back Terry Swanson.

Swanson joins the Riders after spending the 2018 pre-season with the Houston Texans. In four games with the Texans, Swanson rushed for 74 yards and scored one touchdown, a 37-yard TD run against the Dallas Cowboys.

Before turning pro, the 24-year-old spent four seasons at the University of Toledo, playing in 49 games for the Rockets. Swanson completed his NCAA career with 31 rushing touchdowns and 3,601 yards, ranking fourth on Toledo’s all-time rushing list. He also added 55 receptions for 492 yards and two touchdowns.

The Pennsylvania native was a consistent presence in the backfield throughout his time at Toledo with his best season coming as a senior. In 2017, Swanson was named first-team All-MAC (Mid-American Conference) after leading the conference with an average of 104.8 rushing yards per game, while finishing second in rushing touchdowns with 14. He was also named second-team All-MAC following his 2015 sophomore season.

Swanson joins a crowded Riders backfield that includes two-time CFL divisional all-star William Powell, second year man Jamal Morrow, former Seattle Seahawks’ runner Xavier Turner with Canadians Kienan LaFrance, Atlee Simon and David Savard.
