Titans release former CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player Cameron Wake

The Tennessee Titans have released veteran defensive lineman Cameron Wake.

Waker signed a three-year contract with the Titans during free agency in March 2019, which included $7.25 million USD in guaranteed money. That ended a 10-year run with the Miami Dolphins. The 38-year-old finished the 2019 season on injured reserve after playing in nine games for Tennessee last season, recording a team-high 11 quarterback hits along with 2.5 sacks and five tackles.

Wake became the 33rd player in NFL history to record 100 or more sacks when he took down 2018 No. 1 overall draft pick Baker Mayfield in the end zone for a safety last September. Buffalo Bills great Bruce Smith has the most sacks all-time with 200 quarterback takedowns.

Wake was a one-man wrecking crew in two seasons with the B.C. Lions, recording 137 tackles and 39 sacks in 36 regular season games. Wake earned the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie award in 2007 and was twice named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player (2007, 2008).

The Penn State University product earned almost $52 million USD during his tenure in Miami, a period over which he recorded 360 combined tackles and 98 sacks in 146 games. Wake made the Pro Bowl in five of 10 NFL seasons with the Dolphins and appeared on the NFL Top 100 Players list six times, peaking at 39.

Through 11 NFL seasons Wake has earned over $60 million. Back in December, Wake said he has no plans to retire from professional football. He is one of the NFL’s oldest players, and when healthy remains highly effective.
