Lions working on restructuring Mike Reilly’s contract

A busy offseason for the B.C. Lions doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

General manager Ed Hervey was an active player on the free agent market signing the likes of defensive lineman Micah Johnson and offensive lineman Ryker Mathews. Now, he’s trying to work on his team’s cap number.

According to TSN’s Farhan Lalji, Hervey and crew are currently trying to restructure the contracts of star quarterback Mike Reilly and offensive lineman Sukh Chungh.

Reilly started 16 games in 2019, but his first year as the starter in B.C. was cut short due to injury. The 34-year-old has passed for 3,897 yards, 20 touchdowns against 15 interceptions while completing just under 70 percent of his attempts.

The Lions paid $2.9 million over four years — $725,000 per season — for Reilly to sign on the dotted line in February 2019. That made the 34-year-old the highest-paid player in the league.

Chungh joined the Lions last season — appearing in eight games — after spending the previous four seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was the second overall pick of the 2015 CFL draft.
