The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have re-signed Canadian offensive lineman Michael Couture, the club announced Monday.

The 2016 second-round draft pick was set to become a free agent on Tuesday.

Couture became the team’s starting centre in 2019 following the retirement of veteran Matthias Goossen. The 26-year-old started all 18 regular season games, helping pave the way for the league’s best rushing attack.

The Burnaby, B.C. native was rumoured to have been targeted by the Lions and Argonauts during the league’s negotiation window but ultimately decided to stay in Winnipeg.

Couture was the eleventh-ranked player in our top 50 pending free agent rankings.
