Alouettes release versatile national offensive lineman Spencer Wilson

The Montreal Alouettes have made the first roster move of the Danny Maciocia era, releasing national offensive lineman Spencer Wilson.

The veteran appeared in 16 games with the club in 2019, starting six at right guard and one at right tackle. He signed a two-year contract with the team during free agency last year.

The 31-year-old spent eight seasons with the Calgary Stampeders (2011-2018) and was twice named a CFL all-star. He won a pair of Grey Cups with the team (2014, 2018) before exploring the open market in February 2019. Wilson is arguably the league’s most versatile blocker, capable of starting at all five positions along the offensive line.

The Alouettes have a number of young national offensive linemen under contract for next year including 2019 draftees Zach Wilkinson and Samuel Thomassin along with 2018 first round pick, second overall, Trey Rutherford and first-round supplemental draft choice Tyler Johnstone.
