Maciocia started his CFL coaching career in Montreal spending five seasons with the Alouettes from 1996-2001. That final year Maciocia was the offensive coordinator and current Ottawa general manager Marcel Desjardins was assistant director of football operations with the Als.

When Desjardins was searching for the first head coach in Redblacks franchise history, there was a meeting between the two former colleagues. The 52-year-old was one of six candidates for the top job in Ottawa prior to the new incarnation of a pro football team kicking off. However, with the position now vacant, the discussions won’t be revisited with Maciocia.

Maciocia is currently the head coach for the University of Montreal Carabins. The Carabins played in the 2019 Vanier Cup against the University of Calgary, losing 27-13 to the Dinos after Montreal won the Quebec Conference showdown in the Dunsmore Cup versus Laval. Maciocia is the only coach to win a Vanier Cup and Grey Cup.
