Stamps release linebacker Dexter McCoil to pursue NFL opportunities

The Calgary Stampeders have released linebacker Dexter McCoil

“We’re going to release Dex because he’s getting a little bit of love NFL-wise and we made that deal with him. His agent’s talked to some teams. We gotta keep our word on that,” head coach Dave Dickenson said.

“He’ll be a guy we’d have to circle the wagons back after the NFL season is over.”

He played 18 games recording 26 tackles, defended five passes and intercepted another.

McCoil ended the 2018 season on the Los Angeles Chargers practice roster. Prior to that he had been an NFL free agent since October 9, 2018 when the San Francisco 49ers released him from their practice roster. The 49ers claimed McCoil off waivers and he played in four games making eight tackles in 2017.

McCoil played two seasons for Edmonton. He made 144 tackles, intercepted nine passes and six sacks. After winning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie award in 2014, McCoil helped the Eskimos win the Grey Cup in 2015. He was recently drafted by the XFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks.
