Anthony Gaitor refuses role change, sent home by Bombers

Just days before the West Semi-Final veteran defensive back Anthony Gaitor has made a selfish decision.

“I switched his roles and he decided to move on,” head coach Mike O’Shea said.

“I gave him a different role and he decided not to accept it.”

Head coach Mike O’Shea wanted to make a change in his duties, but Gaitor decided against it. The 31-year-old had started 14 games exclusively at the strong-side linebacker position for Winnipeg during the regular season. He made 34 tackles and three sacks as the Bombers went 11-7 earning a playoff spot.

Gaitor joined the Bombers in February 2018 after two seasons with the B.C. Lions. Through those two years, he played 23 games, notching 73 defensive tackles, three interceptions, two defensive touchdowns and two forced fumbles.

He played collegiate football at Florida International from 2007-2010, recording 197 total tackles, 11 interceptions, 19 tackles for loss and four sacks. Gaitor was a seventh-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2011, and he also spent time with Miami, Arizona and New Orleans in the NFL.

Winnipeg played Marcus Rios and Mercy Maston at SAM linebacker while Gaitor was injured. The setback occurred against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 16.
