Lions’ QB Mike Reilly undergoes surgery on fractured wrist; expected to make full recovery

B.C. Lions quarterback Mike Reilly underwent successful surgery on his broken left wrist on Sunday, October 13.

Mike Reilly suffered a fractured left wrist in the first quarter of the club’s game versus the Edmonton Eskimos. Reilly underwent surgery on Sunday to repair the fracture which included the insertion of a small plate held in place with six screws. Full recovery is expected to take six to eight weeks.

Reilly was crunched by two Edmonton Eskimos defenders, driven to the turf by linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox. After the play he was in a lot of pain favoring his left wrist. TSN mics picked up the veteran QB saying: “I think it’s broken.” And it was.

Reilly had started every regular season game (16) so far in 2019, but his first year as the starter in B.C. is cut short by the setback. The 34-year-old has passed for 3,897 yards, 20 touchdowns against 15 interceptions while completing just under 70 percent of his attempts.

The Lions paid $2.9 million over four years — $725,000 per season — for Reilly to sign on the dotted line in February. That made the 34-year-old the highest-paid player in the league. Reilly’s season is over.
