Eric Lapointe declined 50 per cent offer from the Lenkov’s to join Alouettes ownership group

Eric Lapointe said thanks but no thanks to the Lenkov brothers, according to Montreal Gazette reporter Herb Zurkowsky.

Peter and Jeffrey Lenkov are being courted by CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie as the potential new owners of the Alouettes franchise and were in Montreal for the game in Week 6.

The Canadian Football Hall of Fame running back played the last six seasons of his CFL career for the Alouettes and believes the franchise can thrive in La Belle Province under local ownership. But the Lenkov’s haven’t lived in Montreal for decades, likely a large reason why LaPointe turned them down.

“For us we need to build the team like it was back in the days around Quebecers. We need to make sure that we do like Larry Smith was doing – shaking hands, getting involved. It’s a different type of organization, but it doesn’t mean that it sucks. It doesn’t mean that it’s bad – I think it’s a fantastic business,” Lapointe said in March.

Lapointe’s own group was denied ownership by the league. After that, Lapointe joined Clifford Starke’s crew, but that didn’t come to pass by the CFL office either. The 35-year-old Starke is the chairman of Hampstead Private Captital and made a strong push to buy the Als.

The Lenkov’s are the people Ambrosie clearly wants to take over ownership of the Alouettes, but as Zurkowsky noted, if Lapointe didn’t want to be a part of their group he wasn’t believing in the vision or potential of the team under their watch.
