Who is the CFL’s oldest player following the retirement of Ricky Ray?

Ricky Ray announced his retirement last week, ending one of the greatest careers in CFL history.

Ray’s legacy is spectacular — his list of statistics, championships, and awards is staggering. The fact that he was also universally well-liked and highly-respected as a person doesn’t hurt, either.

His retirement also brings with it the end of an era.

Ray, 39, was the league’s oldest active player with the exception of Kevin Glenn, 39, who is not currently under contract with a CFL team. Darian Durant, 36, would also fall into that category (kind of). Though he’s officially retired, Durant has made no secret of his desire to return to the field should the right opportunity present itself.

This begs the question — following Ray’s retirement, who is the CFL’s oldest player?

The answer is Montreal Alouette return specialist Stefan Logan. That’s right — a return specialist.

Returning kicks and punts is often considered a young man’s game but that’s not the case for the 37-year-old Logan. The twelve-year pro is the league’s only active player born in 1981 and the oldest player currently on a roster.

The league’s next two oldest players are Winnipeg long snapper Chad Rempel (36) and Montreal defensive end John Bowman (36), the league’s only players born in 1982.

The CFL also has four active players who were born in 1983: Montreal centre Luc Brodeur-Jordain, 36; Toronto offensive tackle Chris Van Zeyl, 35; Winnipeg kicker/punter Justin Medlock, 35; and Saskatchewan defensive end Charleston Hughes.
