Cleveland currently has 2018 No. 1 overall NFL pick Baker Mayfield and Drew Stanton on the roster at the quarterback position.
The AAF’s Orlando Apollos selected Gilbert with their first round pick in the quarterback draft and he passed for a league-best 2,152 yards to go with 13 touchdowns against three interceptions while completing over 60 per cent of his passes in Steve Spurrier’s offence. That earned Gilbert another NFL look.
Gilbert was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the sixth round, 214th overall during the 2014 NFL draft. He spent time on the Rams and New England Patriots practice roster as a rookie. The Detroit Lions cut Gilbert after training camp in 2015 and the Oakland Raiders kept him on the practice squad for that season. The Carolina Panthers signed Gilbert in 2017 and he saw his first NFL action, completing two-of-three passes for 40 yards, in the final regular season game of the 2018 schedule.
The Riders will be paying close attention to what Gilbert does with the Browns.
