Bombers re-sign promising pass rusher Jackson Jeffcoat

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have re-signed American defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat to a two-year contract extension through the 2020 season.

The 28-year-old had five sacks and 21 defensive tackles last season and added two sacks in the playoffs. He had seven sacks in his rookie season in 2017.

Jeffcoat has elite-level talent but needs to stay healthy: he played in just 12 games last season after suiting up for 16 in his first year.

He worked out for the Cincinnati Bengals in December but an inability to stay on the field likely cost him an NFL shot. By signing a two-year deal, Jeffcoat could get another chance to work out for American teams next winter as part of the recently reinstated NFL window. But at 28 years old and 29 in December the likelihood of an NFL contract seems like a long shot.

`”Jackson has continued to develop into a very strong pass rusher for us,” Bombers general manager Kyle Walters said in statement. “He was able to come back strong after missing some time due to injury last season, and really played well in the post-season for us as well. He’s a big part of our defence up front and we are thrilled to have him back.”

Jeffcoat was set to become a free agent in February.
