Canadian OL Tyler Johnstone selected by Alouettes in supplemental draft

Canadian offensive lineman Tyler Johnstone has been chosen by the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL supplemental draft on Monday.

Five teams bid first round picks with the Alouettes sacrificing their 2019 selection to secure Johnstone.

“He’s the best, most experienced Canadian prospect with tackle position-specific skills to come about in a long time,” one personnel man said after seeing Johnstone work out live for teams in Toronto in June.

Johnstone played for the University of Oregon starting at left tackle for 39 games, including all 13 in his senior season when he was named a first-team All-Pac 12 selection and named a second-team All-American in 2015.

The 25-year-old went unselected in the 2016 NFL draft, but he was signed by the Los Angeles Chargers and spent that season on the injured reserve. The Chargers released Johnstone in April 2017.
