Regina LB Nick Cross stripped of USports rookie award over positive marijuana test

University of Regina Rams linebacker Nick Cross has been stripped of his 2018 USports rookie of the year award after testing positive for marijuana.

Cross tested positive for cannabis after a game against UBC on Oct. 28, 2017 and received a two-month sanction that expired on Jan. 4 of this year.

Cross, who registered 59 tackles, one sack and an interception for the Rams last season, also lost his USports All-Canadian designation and the Can West rookie-of-the-year award.

USports has given its rookie-of-the-year award to Tre Ford of the University of Waterloo Warriors while offensive lineman Tyler Packer of the University of Calgary Dinos gets the Can West honours.

While cannabis will soon be legal in Canada, it is still classified as a specified substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list. The CFL, meanwhile, does not test for marijuana.
