Waterloo Warriors receiver Lam Diing was stabbed to death early Sunday morning after an altercation at a Kitchener residence.
Police were called to a home in a quiet residential neighbourhood just after midnight where they found a male suffering from a stab wound. He was taken to hospital where he later died.
The 23-year-old Diing played three seasons with the Warriors. He had seven catches for 89 yards and a touchdown last season and was invited to the CFL’s Ontario regional combine in March.
Diing, who was born in Khartoum, Sudan, came to Canada to escape the civil unrest and violence in his native homeland.
Waterloo Regional Police said they were called to a residence on Kenora Drive just after midnight for reports of an altercation outside the house.
Police said the victim and the accused were at the Kenora Drive residence for a get-together.
Nicholas Salim Ndayisenga, 22, faces a charge of second-degree murder in connection with Diing’s death. He appears in court on Monday.
Tributes have already started on social media and a GoFundMe campaign has been started to help Diing’s family with funeral expenses.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own, Lam Diing.
May you Rest in Peace Lam. #ForeverAWarrior 🖤💛🏈
