Riders ink all-star DL Charleston Hughes to extension

Saskatchewan has signed defensive lineman Charleston Hughes to an extension through the 2019 season with the Riders, per sources.

The 34-year-old was acquired in early February when the Riders sent quarterback Vernon Adams to Hamilton for Hughes and would’ve been a free agent after the 2018 season prior to the new contract.

Hughes was a CFL all-star in 2017 recording 40 tackles, 11 sacks and one forced fumble in 14 games. The two-time Grey Cup champion played in 147 games for the Stampeders recording 372 tackles, 99 sacks, 23 forced fumbles, three interceptions and one defensive touchdown.

Hughes has led the CFL in sacks twice in his career, 2013 and 2016. He left Calgary tied for the franchise record in sacks at 99. Five out of the last six seasons Hughes has notched double-digit sack totals and been a league all-star four times.
