“Gainer” wonders why Riders would replace Muamba with Hurl

Gainer the Gopher popped up from his winter hibernation on Wednesday to ask a pertinent question.

Two-word answer: salary cap.

Hurl was signed on Wednesday and Muamba released later in the day with a $35,000 off-season payment due Feb. 15 in the final season of a three-year contract that could’ve seen him make up to $220,000.

The tweet put a smile on Muamba’s face.

Last season, Muamba had his best year since the CFL all-star campaign he put together in 2013. The 28-year-old played in 17 games making 82 tackles, three forced fumbles and two interceptions to earn the Riders Most Outstanding Canadian award.

Hurl started all 18 games for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last season registering 65 tackles and a sack. Most importantly for the Riders: Hurl’s cap number is about half of Muamba’s.

But Gainer the Gopher’s question is still valid.
