Alouettes officially sign Canadian DL Jamaal Westerman

The Alouettes have signed national defensive end Jamaal Westerman to a two-year contract.

Westerman had seven sacks in 11 games last season before a season-ending upper body injury sidelined him for the rest of the year.

“We are thrilled to have signed Jamaal and to be able to reunite him with his brother on our defensive line. Jamaal is a disruptive force on the field who leads by example,” said Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed in a statement. “Not only did we get better on defence with this move, but we also changed our ratio.”

The 32-year-old joined the Bombers in 2015 after spending five seasons in the NFL. In 47 games in Winnipeg, Westerman made 118 tackles, 32 sacks and four forced fumbles. He was a West Division all-star and West Division nominee for Most Outstanding Canadian in 2015.

In 58 career games in the NFL with the Jets, Colts, Cardinals, Bills and Steelers, he put up 45 tackles and six quarterback sacks, while forcing a fumble and recovering four.
