Argos QB Ricky Ray celebrating first, deciding on future later

Ricky Ray is focused on celebrating the Grey Cup championship Toronto won in stunning fashion and says he’ll make a decision about returning to football down the road.

“Yeah, I’m not sure. The last few years just with some of the injuries and stuff I’ve just been trying to play one year at a time. Just trying to play one game and then play two games and then turn that into six games, just try and stay on the field,” Ray said after the Argos came back and won 27-24 to upset Calgary in the 105th Grey Cup.

The 38-year-old quarterback completed 19-of-32 passes for 297 yards and one touchdown in the win. That capped a comeback season for Ray as he threw for 5,546 yards, his highest total since 2008. He shared a moment with head coach Marc Trestman who helped rejuvenate the veteran passer in the hallway.

“I really haven’t thought too much about long-term or next year or anything like that,” Ray said “I’m going to celebrate this one for a while and ask myself the same questions that I did last year at the end of the year: do I feel like playing? Last year it was yes and we’ll see what happens this year.”

Teammates were chanting Ray’s name and yelling G.O.A.T. in the locker room and even interrupted his post-game press conference to make sure they included him in the celebrations.

Ray, who is scheduled to become a free agent in February, has some drinks to consume before making a career decision.
