Cornell drops lawsuit against Kent Austin after he pays them $100K: report

Hamilton Tiger-Cats vice president of football operations Kent Austin has paid Cornell University more than $100,000 to settle the school’s lawsuit against him, according to a report in the Cornell Daily Sun.

The school sued Austin last month alleging his five-year, $1.4 million deal with the university included a penalty clause if he departed before the contract’s scheduled expiration in January, 2015. Austin served as head coach for three seasons beginning in 2010 but left to join the Ticats in December, 2012.

Cornell sued Austin in August, saying the former coach, who is now a vice president of the Ontario team, never paid the penalty and owed the University $100,000 plus 9 percent interest and court fees. The University dropped its suit on Sept. 12, saying in court that, “upon full payment of the claim,” Cornell “voluntarily discontinues” its lawsuit against Austin.

Austin stepped down as head coach of the Ticats on Aug. 24 with the team at 0-8 and was replaced by June Jones.
