Lions cut kicker Swayze Waters

B.C. has released kicker Swayze Waters, per sources.

The 30-year-old was signed in March and didn’t play in a regular season game with the club, spending the opening three weeks of the Leos season on the injured list (quad).

During that time rookie kicker and punter Ty Long performed well enough to take the job punting 23 times for 1,067 yards (46.4 average), made 8-of-9 field goals and 3-of-5 converts. The 24-year-old is cheaper than Waters.

Waters spent four seasons as a kicker and punter in Toronto before signing as a punter with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers last off-season but he was released in August.

Waters earned a Grey Cup ring with Toronto in 2012. He was the CFL’s top special teams player in 2014 when he averaged 47.7 yards per punt and connected on 47 of 52 field goals but missed most of the 2015 season with a hip injury.
