The Birmingham Stallions listed Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma as inactive for the team’s United Football League regular-season opener on Friday night against the Louisville Kings.

Elgersma is ineligible to play games for the team while his application for a P1 U.S. work visa is pending. There is no timeline for when the situation could be resolved.

The London, Ont. native has signed his contract with the Stallions, but it has yet to be officially registered by the UFL due to the ongoing work visa process. In the meantime, he is permitted to be with the team on an unpaid basis, which allowed him to participate in training camp and subsequent practices.

Elgersma was selected in the UFL Quarterback Draft by Birmingham and reported to training camp with the team on Monday, February 23. He was away for a few days to throw as a free agent invitee at the 2026 NFL Combine, but returned following his trip to Indianapolis.

Stallions’ head coach A.J. McCarron has Matt Corral as his starting quarterback with former Saskatchewan Roughriders pivot Michael Hiers and Donovan Smith behind him.

Corral was selected in the third round, 94th overall, during the 2022 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers, where he spent one season, earning approximately $2.6 million USD. The six-foot-one, 215-pound QB had a stint with the New England Patriots in September 2023.

Corral has a 5-0 record as the Stallions’ starting quarterback, winning three games in 2024 and two in 2025. The 27-year-old has completed 55.4 percent of his passes for 1,142 yards with six touchdowns versus six interceptions while rushing 32 times for 195 yards, 6.1 per carry.

After being released by the Green Bay Packers following training camp in August, Elgersma has since worked out for the New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, and Miami Dolphins. Suiting up in UFL games would give him more experience playing the American game.

The six-foot-five, 227-pound passer signed with Green Bay as an undrafted free agent in May following a rookie mini-camp tryout, becoming the fourth Canadian university QB to sign with an NFL team and the first since 1987.

Winnipeg holds Elgersma’s Canadian Football League rights after the Blue Bombers selected him in the second round, 18th overall, in the 2025 CFL Draft.

Corral completed 21-of-30 passes for 208 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in a 15-13 win over Louisville. He threw the game-winning TD pass to Justyn Ross with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Birmingham plays the Houston Gamblers in Week 2 on Sunday, April 5 at 6 p.m. ET on NFL Network.
