Five-time Grey Cup champion, former Queen’s head coach Bob Howes passes away

Longtime CFL offensive lineman Bob Howes passed away on Monday, February 16, at the age of 83.

Hailing from Kirkland Lake, Ont., Howes entered the CFL in 1968 with the B.C. Lions and spent four seasons with the team. He moved to Edmonton in 1972 and played a decade with the organization, earning a West Division all-star selection at centre in 1973. He was a captain of the Green and Gold dynasty era, winning his first Grey Cup in 1975 and earning four straight from 1978 until his retirement in 1981.

After his CFL career, Howes returned to his alma mater, Queen’s University, as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Physical Education and football coach. He served as offensive coordinator in 1992 when the Gaels won the Vanier Cup and later took over as head coach in 1995, posting a 23-22 record over five seasons. He was twice named the OQIFC Coach of the Year and won a Dunsmore Cup in his first season, winning a second conference title two years later by way of an Ottawa forfeit.

In his later years, Howes would serve as an assistant coach at the University of Toronto and St. Francis Xavier.

Howes is survived by his sons Chris and Beau, and his grandchildren, Jack, Rhys, Shyloh and Emma. Messages of condolences can be sent to the Simcoe Funeral Home in advance of a celebration of life in June 2026, and donations can be made in his honour to Queen’s football by clicking here.
