The Toronto Argonauts have signed American kicker Matt Ammendola.
The 29-year-old spent time with six teams over three seasons in the NFL, seeing action in 20 games primarily as an emergency replacement. He originally signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2021, before stints with the New York Jets, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, and Houston again. He went 24-for-35 on field goal attempts with a long of 49 yards, while connecting on 29-of-33 extra points and averaging 64.7 yards per kickoff with 55 touchbacks on 85 attempts. He also punted six times for an average of 48.5 yards with two pinned inside the 20-yard line.
The five-foot-nine, 195-pound specialist was last under contract with the San Antonio Brahmas of the UFL in 2024, but was released in training camp after losing an open competition with former Argo and YouTube star Donald De La Haye.
Ammendola played collegiately at Oklahoma State from 2015 to 2019, where he connected on 60-of-78 field goal attempts with a long of 53 yards. The native of Lansdale, Pa., also made 179 extra points and averaged 61. 4 yards per kickoff with the Cowboys.
The Toronto Argonauts finished third in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 5-13 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Franchise quarterback Chad Kelly was unable to play all season due to a fractured leg he suffered in the East Final the previous year, giving way to Nick Arbuckle, who threw for 4,370 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions to be named the team’s candidate for Most Outstanding Player.
The Argonauts ranked seventh in net offence, sixth in net defence, and seventh with a turnover differential of minus-eight. The club’s leading rusher was Spencer Brown with 314 yards, the leading receiver was Dejon Brissett with 907 yards, and the leading tackler was Cameron Judge with 79 tackles. Toronto ranked ninth in attendance with average crowds of 15,109, which was a 0.1 percent decrease from the previous year.
