Calgary Stampeders extend Derrick Moncrief after bounce-back season

The Calgary Stampeders have signed American strong-side linebacker Derrick Moncrief to a contract extension. He was a pending free agent.

The 32-year-old started 18 regular-season games for the Stampeders at strong-side linebacker in 2025, recording 67 defensive tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and one touchdown.

“We’re excited to bring back another piece of the core of our team,” said head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson in a statement. “Derrick is a great leader and he plays the game the right way.”

The six-foot-one, 210-pound native of Prattville, Ala. has made 365 defensive tackles, nine special teams tackles, 12 interceptions, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one touchdown over 106 regular-season CFL games as a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Edmonton Elks, and Stampeders.

Moncrief is a one-time All-CFL selection and two-time All-West Division selection.

“What an awesome blessing it is to be re-signing with this world-class organization and also working alongside great people,” said Moncrief. “I’m excited for Year 2 and bringing a Grey Cup to Cowtown. Go Stamps!”

The Calgary Stampeders finished third in the West Division standings in 2025 with an 11-7 record but lost the West Semi-Final to the B.C. Lions. Vernon Adams Jr. threw for 4,247 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions over 17 regular-season starts, posting a 11-6 record as the team’s starting quarterback.

The Stampeders ranked fourth in net offence, seventh in net defence, and second with a turnover differential of plus-nine. Dedrick Mills won the CFL’s rushing title with 1,409 yards, while the team’s leading receiver was Dominique Rhymes with 886 yards, and leading tackler was Jacob Roberts with 102 tackles. Calgary finished fifth in attendance with average crowds of 22,295, which was a 3.5 percent increase from the previous year.
