Joe McKnight’s killer charged with murder

The man who shot Saskatchewan Roughriders running back Joe McKnight in an alleged road rage incident has been charged with with second degree murder.

The 54-year-old Gasser was originally arrested on a manslaughter charge, four days after the Dec. 5 shooting in New Orleans. Gasser’s bond has been increased to $750,000 and, if convicted, he faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

According to authorities Gasser and McKnight were involved in a dispute over a traffic incident and McKnight got out of his vehicle and approached Gasser’s car. He was shot three times by Gasser, who was still seated in his vehicle. Gasser remained on the scene and surrendered to authorities.

McKnight was signed to Saskatchewan’s practice roster last September and he ran for 150 yards in his first CFL start on Oct. 15 as the Roughriders beat Toronto 29-11. He finished the 2016 season with 228 rushing yards and 80 receiving yards over five games with Edmonton and Saskatchewan.
