GoFundMe for Saskatchewan QB Anton Amundrud surpasses $60k goal following cancer diagnosis

A GoFundMe launched to support University of Saskatchewan quarterback Anton Amundrud in his battle with cancer has surpassed its initial goal of $60,000 and is still climbing.

460 different individuals have contributed to the fundraiser started by Marcia Szara Wallace, which is intended to help “cover the costs of travel away from home, accommodations, meals, time away from work, and the many unexpected costs that come with long-term hospital stays.” The largest donation, which was made anonymously, totalled $5,000.

Amundrud started Saskatchewan’s first five regular-season games this year, throwing for 1,604 yards, 14 touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He was named a Canada West all-star despite missing the last three games of the regular season after he began experiencing unusual symptoms. The school announced last week that the fourth-year passer had been diagnosed with a combination of T-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), and had begun treatment.

The six-foot-three, 210-pound native of Lloydminster, Alta., has been the Huskies’ starting quarterback since 2023. He ranks third in program history in career completions (558), fifth in touchdown passes (42), and sixth in passing yards (6,945).

Amundrud is currently in hospital and undergoing his first round of chemotherapy as his team’s season continues. Saskatchewan captured the Hardy Cup as Canada West champions with backup Jake Farrell at the helm and secured a 22-11 victory over Queen’s in the Mitchell Bowl national semi-final last week. They are slated to face the Montreal Carabins in the Vanier Cup at Mosaic Stadium in Regina on Saturday, November 22, at 2:15 p.m. EST.
