Top CFL prospect Akeel Lynch announces retirement due to concussions

Canadian running back Akeel Lynch has announced his retirement from football due to multiple head injuries Monday.

The 22-year-old Toronto native was the top-ranked running back and third overall rated prospect on the CFL’s Scouting Bureau of the top prospects eligible for the 2017 CFL Draft.

Lynch spent four years at Penn State University, redshirting in 2012 and playing three seasons in 2013, 2014 and 2015. During his time as a Nittany Lion, he logged 262 carries for 1,318 yards and seven touchdowns with a 5.0-yards-per-carry average.

After Lynch finished his degree at Penn State he landed at Nevada as a graduate transfer to pursue a masters degree in educational leadership. He suffered two concussions in four games with the Wolfpack.

The five-foot-11, 220-pounder was seen as a potentially dynamic Canadian back in the CFL.
