Alouettes release Duron Carter and Kenny Stafford, can’t play for another team

The Montreal Alouettes have released receivers Duron Carter and Kenny Stafford.

League rules prohibit either player from suiting up with another CFL team this season.

Carter and Stafford Tweeted news of their release on Monday morning.

Because both players were released after last Wednesday’s trade deadline, they can be signed by another team but are ineligible to play again this season.

The move comes a month after general manager Jim Popp stepped down as coach, replaced on an interim basis by Jacques Chapdelaine. The team won it’s first game under Chapdelaine but have since lost two straight, including a 22-8 defeat at the hands of the Stampeders on Saturday. Carter had zero catches and was targeted just five times in the loss and was clearly frustrated.

Carter has been at the centre of controversy for much of the 2016 season. He was suspended one game for bumping Redblacks coach Rick Campbell after scoring a touchdown in a game on June 30 and was involved, along with Stafford, in a practice confrontation with quarterback Rakeem Cato.

Carter’s reputation as a bad teammate is well documented.
