Nine thoughts on nine teams: trade deadline needs

With the trade deadline set for 3:59 p.m. EST on Wednesday, here’s a look at what each CFL team might be looking to acquire.

B.C. Lions: Richie Leone has been stellar as a punter, but he has the worst conversion rate on field goal attempts (72.5%) among all starting place kickers. 11 missed three-pointers, including what proved to be a crucial wide 43-yard boot in a two-point loss to Winnipeg in Week 16, ties Leone for the most in the CFL this season. If healthy, dealing for Montreal’s Anthony Ferra (16-for-20 on field goals) could provide some important insurance.

Edmonton Eskimos: Added experience and depth at import linebacker could pique Ed Hervey’s interest. J.C. Sherritt man’s the middle for Edmonton and Deon Lacey starts at weakside linebacker with Alex Hoffman-Ellis backing up. After Henoc Muamba signed in Saskatchewan Greg Jones could be available.

Calgary Stampeders: It’s clear Calgary has no pressing needs, but John Hufnagel always looks for value. If the Stamps see an opportunity to grab a player who fits in with what they do, Hufnagel could pounce. See the Jerome Messam swap from last year’s trade deadline.

Saskatchewan Roughriders: The Riders would be open to trading some players if Canadian draft picks were coming back to Saskatchewan – stockpiling selections to continue building national depth.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers: A veteran Canadian receiver who can play slot or out wide. Shamawd Chambers has been rumoured to be available and he’s shown he can perform in the playoffs – 2015 Grey Cup Most Valuable Canadian.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats: Finding a Canuck defensive back type who can backup at free safety or play in a pinch and help on special teams might interest Hamilton. Craig Butler is out for the season, Courtney Stephen and Jay Langa on the six-game injured list and Shane Herbert on the one-game injured reserve.

Toronto Argonauts: Developmental players. Toronto would be willing to deal for athletes Jim Barker and the Argos feel could have bright futures.

Ottawa Redblacks: Chris Williams ACL injury clearly changes Ottawa’s offence. Would general manager Marcel Desjardins look at Duron Carter to be the Redblacks’ new No. 1 receiver? The team in the nation’s capital is leading the East Division and landing a talent like Carter, who is on a one-year contract, could help Grey Cup aspirations. Even Kenny Stafford would replace some of the over-the-top speed lost with Williams sidelined.

Montreal Alouettes: If a quarterback with some experience were to be available Montreal might like one to help the young Alouettes pivots develop. Darian Durant would fit in La belle province for a number of reasons.
