Alouettes set to release Canadian DT Vaughn Martin

The Montreal Alouettes are expected to release Canadian defensive tackle Vaughn Martin today, per CFL sources.

Martin signed a two-year deal with the Alouettes in February after playing seven seasons in the NFL, with San Diego, Miami, Detroit and Kansas City. In 51 games, he had 79 defensive tackles and three quarterback sacks. The 6-foot-4, 300-pounder, who was born in Jamaica but raised in Ontario, was selected by the Als in the fifth round, 39th overall of the 2011 Canadian college draft — two years after Martin was drafted in the fourth round by the San Diego Chargers.

The Alouettes had already asked Martin to renegotiate his lucrative contract but have now released him in an effort to save salary cap space. Montreal could be looking to free up money to take a run at American kicker Swayze Waters, the former Toronto Argonaut who was released by Carolina earlier this week.

The 30-year-old made eight tackles in seven games with the Alouettes this season and will likely draw interest from several CFL teams.
