Legendary competitive eater Joey Chestnut set a new world record at Regina’s Queen City Exhibition on Saturday, wiping the floor with a trio of Saskatchewan Roughriders in the process.

The native of Vallejo, Cal. housed 343 mini-donuts in under eight minutes to shatter his previous all-time mark of 304 set last year. It adds to the resume of the number-one-ranked competitor in Major League Eating, who holds world records for timed consumption of more than 50 different foods.

Among his unsuccessful challengers at Confederation Park were three members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders: running back A.J. Ouellette, right tackle Jermarcus Hardrick, and defensive tackle Anthony Lanier. The group of elite athletes, who weigh a combined 812 pounds compared to Chestnut’s 220, managed to down just 98 confections, proving they aren’t on the same level as the 16-time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest champion.

“It’s great to be able to know that I can still set a new world record without trying hard,” Chestnut told CTV News Regina after the event. “My goal is not only to win, but also to show improvement. It’s what I love doing.”

Fortunately, none of the Rider participants were on the roster for Saturday night’s clash with the Edmonton Elks, as each was nursing an injury. Had they been forced onto the field with bellies full of fried dough, the results might have rivalled the Banjo Bowl stomach flu fiasco from 2022.

All proceeds from the event went directly to the Regina Food Bank.
