QB Cody Fajardo out as Alouettes to start Caleb Evans against Riders

The Montreal Alouettes have moved franchise quarterback Cody Fajardo to the six-game injured list, leaving Caleb Evans in the starting role against Saskatchewan this week.

Fajardo was injured after the first quarter of Montreal’s recent loss to the Toronto Argonauts, tweaking his hamstring while scrambling out of bounds. The Alouettes were on a bye this past week but Fajardo didn’t participate at all once the team returned to the practice field ahead of Thursday’s game.

The 32-year-old native of Brea, Calif. has completed 77.5 percent of his passes for 1,636 yards, 10 touchdowns, and four interceptions through six games this season, helping the Alouettes off to a 5-1 start.

Evans has completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 177 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions this season with most of those numbers coming in relief of Fajardo against the Argonauts. The four-year CFL veteran has thrown for 3,330 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions over 51 career games with the Redblacks and Alouettes, also recording 197 carries for 929 yards and 30 touchdowns.

James Morgan, a former fourth-round pick of the New York Jets, will dress for his first career CFL game behind second-string quarterback Davis Alexander. CFL all-star safety Marc-Antoine Dequoy will also return to the lineup after missing the team’s last game to Toronto due to injury along with boundary halfback Wesley Sutton.

Veteran receiver Nate Behar, who signed with the Alouettes this past week, will dress in a depth role behind Shedler Fervius.

Montreal has also moved Canadian receiver Kaion Julien-Grant to the six-game injured list along with veteran offensive lineman Kristian Matte. Nafees Lyon, the team’s starting boundary cornerback, is now on the one-game injured list with Dionté Ruffin getting the start in his place against Saskatchewan.

The Montreal Alouettes (5-1) will host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-1) on Thursday, July 25 with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT.
