The B.C. Lions will field a skeleton crew for their preseason opener on Saturday in Calgary.

Just two projected starters are expected to take part in the game, with strong-side linebacker Emmanuel Rugamba and safety Adrian Greene dressing for their usual roles. The rest of the team’s top offensive and defensive units will be staying home, including quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. and stars like Alexander Hollins, Garry Peters, and Ben Hladik. Key NFL additions Travis Fulgham and Christian Covington also will not make the trip.

Jake Dolegala, who was acquired by the team in free agency after two seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, will get the start under centre. Dakota Prukop and Chase Brice are also expected to see time at quarterback amidst the inexperienced lineup.

Among the notable players earning starting opportunities are a pair of 2024 CFL Draft picks. First-round selection George Una will draw in at right guard, while third-round pick Cristophe Beaulieu will lock down the field halfback spot. Fellow Canadian rookie Kieran Poissant, a territorial exemption from the CJFL’s Westshore Rebels, will also get the start at receiver.

A cast of receiving newcomers, including Stanley Berryhill, Jeff Cotton, Jalen Sample, and Devin Ravenel, will attempt to prove they deserve consideration for the open receiving spot left by the injury to Keon Hatcher. Similarly, defensive backs Ronald Kent, Tyon Davis, and Jordan Perryman hope that quality starting minutes will put them in contention for T.J. Lee’s halfback spot.

The Lions will kick off against the Stampeders at 4:00 p.m. ET on June 25. The game is available to stream for free on CFL+.
