Saskatchewan Roughriders sign former NFL, XFL linebacker C.J. Avery

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed American linebacker C.J. Avery.

The five-foot-eleven, 230-pound defender signed with the Chicago Bears after going unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft but was waived partway through training camp amid an injury. He later signed with the Vegas Vipers of the XFL and made 62 tackles over 10 games during the 2023 season.

The 25-year-old native of Grenada, Miss. played 54 collegiate games at the University of Louisville and made 349 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, nine sacks, three interceptions, 16 pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries.

The Riders will open their 2024 regular season on Saturday, June 8 when they visit the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium.
