The Calgary Stampeders have signed American tight end turned offensive lineman Hunter Thedford to their training camp roster.

The six-foot-six, 260-pound target began his collegiate career at Southern Methodist University, playing in 23 games over four seasons. He transferred to the University of Utah for his final campaign in 2019, playing 14 games with the Utes. Across both teams, the Brownwood, Tex. native caught just five passes for 48 yards.

Thedford went unselected in the 2020 NFL Draft, eventually signing with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent after a season out of football. Following his release, he joined the USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers and posted a career season, hauling in 13 passes for 124 yards and one touchdown.

That production landed him opportunities with the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and Cleveland Browns, who all converted him to offensive tackle. Thedford never saw action in an NFL regular season game.

The Stampeders will open the 2024 regular season on Friday, June 7 when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at McMahon Stadium.
