All in the family: B.C. Lions add brother of starting DE, All-American OL Maea Teuhema

The B.C. Lions have signed American offensive lineman Maea Teuhema, the younger brother of their starting defensive end Sione Teuhema.

The six-foot-five, 315-pound blocker began his collegiate career at Louisiana State University, starting 11 games at left guard as a true freshman. He helped Leonard Fournette set a single-season program record of 1,953 rushing yards that season and was named a freshman All-American by ESPN.

Teuhema moved to right tackle mid-way through his sophomore season, adding 10 starts. He was suspended for academic issues the following August and transferred to Southeastern Louisiana University. He started 11 games at left tackle in his lone season as a Lion and was named a second-team FCS All-American, before declaring early for the NFL Draft.

The 27-year-old went unselected in 2018, earning a rookie mini-camp invite from the New Orleans Saints. He has since bounced around the spring football rank, beginning with the AAF’s San Antonio Commanders in 2018. Teuhema spent time with the XFL’s Dallas Renegades and New York Guardians in 2020 and the USFL’s Michigan Panthers in 2022, before splitting last season between the Arlington Renegades and San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL.

The elder Teuhema signed with the Lions ahead of the 2022 season. In 31 CFL games, he has collected 60 tackles and 15 sacks.

Also joining the Lions next season will be American defensive back Alonzo ‘L.J.’ Davis.

The six-foot-two, 200-pound defender wrapped up his collegiate career in 2022 at Northern Arizona University, registering 32 total tackles, 11 pass breakups and two interceptions in 11 games. He transferred from Southern Utah University, where he played in 32 games and was named second-team All-Big Sky at cornerback in 2021.

Davis went unselected in the 2023 NFL Draft but later signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent.

The Lions will open their 2024 regular season on Sunday, June 9 when they visit the Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field.
