Toronto Argonauts make Ryan Hunter CFL’s highest-paid Canadian player for 2025, 2026

The Toronto Argonauts have signed offensive lineman Ryan Hunter to an extension through the 2026 season, a deal that will make him the CFL’s highest-paid Canadian player for the two final years of his contract, per sources.

The 28-year-old was already under contract for the 2024 season and will now make $209,000 in hard money this year as part of the new agreement, making him one of the league’s highest-paid offensive linemen.

Hunter’s earnings will spike in 2025 as he’ll earn $275,000 in hard money with an additional $5,000 available in all-star bonuses. His earnings will increase to $285,000 in hard money in 2026 plus all-star bonuses, $135,600 of which is guaranteed.

The six-foot-three, 315-pound blocker is currently on track to be the highest-paid Canadian player in the CFL in 2025 and 2026 as part of his new deal, which was negotiated by Montreal-based agent Sasha Ghavami.

Hunter started all 18 games at left guard for the Argonauts in 2023, helping the club allow a league-low 19 sacks and finish atop the East Division with a 16-2 regular season record. He was named an East Division and CFL all-star.

The native of North Bay, Ont. was a first-round pick in the 2018 CFL Draft out of Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He signed with the Argonauts following a four-year run in the NFL as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers during which he reportedly earned $659,988 USD.

Hunter won Super Bowl LIV as a member of the Chiefs and the Grey Cup in his first year north of the border with the Argos.

Toronto will open their 2024 regular season on Sunday, June 9 when they host the B.C. Lions at BMO Field.
