Montreal Alouettes grant veteran DL Almondo Sewell his release

The Montreal Alouettes have released veteran American defensive tackle Almondo Sewell, per sources.

The 37-year-old had one year remaining on his contract with the team and was scheduled to make $145,000 in hard money, but will now hit the market after requesting his release. He played in 16 games for the Alouettes in 2023, registering 14 tackles and one sack while helping the franchise hoist their eighth Grey Cup.

Sewell has played in 185 career CFL games over 12 seasons, notching 334 defensive tackles and 69 quarterback sacks. He has been named a league all-star on six different occasions.

The former Akron University Zip played nine seasons in Edmonton before coming to Montreal in 2021. He won a Grey Cup with the green and gold in 2015, his only championship appearance prior to this year.

The move is expected to signal a ratio change for the Alouettes following the departure of Canadian defensive end Lwal Uguak to the NFL. The team could now be in the market for a National starter at defensive tackle heading into free agency.

Montreal will open the 2024 season on June 6 when they visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for a Grey Cup rematch at Princess Auto Stadium.
