Sources: Calgary Stampeders agree to terms with all-star DB Demerio Houston

The Calgary Stampeders have agreed to terms with American defensive back Demerio Houston and, barring anything unforeseen, he’s expected to sign a two-year deal with the team through 2025, per sources. The deal includes $275,000 in hard money.

The 27-year-old defensive back played 15 games for the Bombers in 2023, leading the CFL with seven interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. He racked up 50 defensive tackles and was named a CFL all-star for the first time in his career.

The five-foot-ten, 173-pound defender originally signed with Winnipeg ahead of the cancelled 2020 season and has appeared in 30 games over the last three years, making 84 defensive tackles, three special teams tackles, and nine interceptions.

Prior to his time in the CFL, Houston played four seasons with the Southern University Jaguars. He worked out for the Los Angeles Chargers earlier this off-season.

Pending free agents can negotiate with teams across the league during the current window, which closes on Feb. 11. Players can agree to terms on a contract with a particular team for 2024, however, these deals aren’t legally binding and can’t be finalized or made official until after free agency opens on Feb. 13.

The Stampeders will open the 2024 regular season by hosting the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday, June 7 at McMahon Stadium.
