Setting Sayle: B.C. re-ups all-star DB Marcus Sayles

The B.C. Lions have signed American defensive back Marcus Sayles to a two-year contract extension.

The 29-year-old was scheduled to become a free agent on February 13 but will now remain with the club through 2025. He suited up in all 18 games in his fourth season with the Lions in 2023, recording 38 defensive tackles, three tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and seven pass breakups. Sayles also contributed seven tackles and an interception in two playoff games.

The five-foot-nine, 176-pound halfback had a career year in 2022, collecting 68 defensive tackles and four interceptions to be named a CFL all-star. He was previously named a West Division all-star in 2019 as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, helping that team win a Grey Cup.

In 83 career CFL games with the Bombers and Lions, Sayles has collected 294 defensive tackles, 10 special teams tackles, four sacks, 12 interceptions and seven forced fumbles.

Prior to his CFL career, the native of Manhattan, N.Y. started in 46 games for the University of West Georgia from 2013 to 2016, amassing 123 total tackles, 12 interceptions, 24 pass breakups and a school-record 13 blocked kicks. He later spent time with the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams.

The Lions will open their season on Sunday, June 9 when they visit the Toronto Argonauts.
