Saskatchewan Roughriders re-sign former first-round pick Nelson Lokombo

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed Canadian defensive back Nelson Lokombo to a one-year contract extension, tying him to the team through 2024. He was set to become a free agent next month.

The five-foot-eleven, 190-pound cover man was the second overall pick in the 2021 CFL Draft out of the University of Saskatchewan. He has since appeared in 23 career games, recording 18 defensive tackles, four special teams tackles, and one forced fumble.

The 24-year-old won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2019 as the top defensive player in all of U Sports. He made 39 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, five interceptions four pass breakups, and one forced fumble that season to be named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player in Canada West, a Canada West all-star, and a first-team U Sports All-Canadian.

The native of Abbotsford, B.C. made 115 tackles, 10 interceptions, six tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles over the course of his collegiate career with the Huskies. He is the younger brother of B.C. Lions’ linebacker Boseko Lokombo.

CFL free agency is set to get underway on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at noon EST.
