Franchise quarterback Trevor Harris has restructured his contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. General manager Jeremy O’Day was mum on the details, though he commended Harris for putting the team first, presumably providing some relief against the salary cap.
“There was discussions that we had with Trevor and he was willing to help the team out. We did a little bit of a restructure with Trevor’s contract and Trevor was more than willing to help out, just a team guy,” O’Day told the media via videoconference on Tuesday.
“Trevor was under contract for this season and certainly didn’t have to do anything with his contract but we appreciate that he did.”
O’Day declined to discuss the financial terms of the deal but confirmed that its length remains unchanged from the two-year deal he initially signed with the team last year. As such, the veteran passer remains set to become a free agent following the 2024 season.
The 37-year-old was scheduled to earn $525,000 in 2024, including a $250,000 active roster bonus due on Feb. 1. He made $500,000 this past season after coming over from the Montreal Alouettes in free agency.
Harris started five games for the Riders in 2023 before suffering a tibial plateau fracture that ended his season. He completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,274 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions while posting a 3-2 record as a starter.
The six-foot-three, 212-pound passer has thrown for 29,884 yards, 160 touchdowns, and 75 interceptions over 166 career CFL games as a member of the Toronto Argonauts, Ottawa Redblacks, Edmonton Elks, Alouettes, and Riders.
